BWH is gearing up to walk the walk—the American Heart Association’s (AHA) annual Heart Walk, that is. This year’s walk, which raises money for cardiovascular research, advocacy and education, is Sept. 16 on the Charles River Esplanade.
“I encourage everyone to start a team, join a team or support a team,” said Scott Taylor, BWH software engineer, who is the hospital’s team captain. Taylor has participated in the Heart Walk for three years and feels a special connection to the cause: his daughter Alexandra was born in 2001 with a congenital heart defect and already has undergone two open-heart surgeries. Although she is still growing and complications could arise, Alexandra maintains the life of a normal, active 5-year-old girl—she loves dance, gymnastics, soccer and basketball. This will be her third year walking in the Heart Walk.
“We believe our daughter benefited from years of research and practice, which is what this walk raises money to support,” Taylor said. “I am grateful that her repairs came at a time when she benefited from research and procedures that had been practiced. Without research, we can’t move forward.”
BWH’s fundraising goal is $50,000. “The American Heart Association has raised millions of research dollars for Boston hospitals,” BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, said. “Of all the hospitals, BWH has received the most. Taking part in this event is one way we can say thank you to the AHA for its commitment to supporting our mission of care and research.”
Last year, BWH led the walk and raised nearly $165,000 for the AHA, more than any other group in the walk’s history.
